Trees vs. Technology: Why Natural CO2 Storage Is Still the Best Choice

Rotterdam versus Sierra Leone

With the recent green light from the Council of State for the Porthos project, which aims to store CO2 in empty gas fields under the North Sea, an old question resurfaces: Are technological approaches truly better than Mother Nature?

The promise of Porthos

Porthos aims to store 2.5 megatons of CO2 annually under the sea using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology. It is an ambitious plan, which would reduce approximately 1.5% of the total annual nitrogen emissions in the Netherlands.

The proven power of trees

While we are still exploring the potential of technologies like CCS, there are methods that have proven their effectiveness for centuries. Take, for example, planting trees. Stichting Plant n Boom has set a goal to plant 1 million trees in Sierra Leone by 2030, which amounts to an expected storage of 0.5 million tons of CO2. Trees also provide habitat for animals and offer medicinal benefits to local communities.

Our appeal

Projects like Porthos undoubtedly have their value, but we also believe in the unparalleled power of nature. Therefore, we call on companies and individuals to work with us and invest in sustainable solutions that Mother Nature has already provided.
