Commuting

Tracking home-work mobility is new and can be requested through a survey. At Plant N Boom, we do this as part of the baseline measurement, and measurements after 1 and 12 months.

  • The data requested is:
  • Home address postcode (four digits and two letters)
  • Work address postcode (base of operations)
  • Commuting distance there and back (the most common travel distance between home and work location). Please note: it does not matter who determines this. It can be the employer or employee.
  • Main mode of transport for commuting. This is the mode of transport used for the longest distance.

N.B. If the car or bicycle is provided by the employer (private ownership or lease), this is tracked elsewhere.

How many people need to be surveyed?

You should consider a 95% confidence level and a 2% margin of error.

Example calculation: you are an employer with 350 employees (calculated on January 1st of the year). You apply a 95% confidence level and a 2% margin of error. Your response should then be 306 employees. If you have an organization with 15,000 employees and you apply a 95% confidence level and a 2% margin of error, the required response for the survey to provide reliable data is 2,070 employees.

You can find an example of sample size calculators on surveymonkey or steekproefcalculator.
